La Paz and Tiwanaku 8 April 2007
La Paz - Bolivia

We leave Copacabana to take the road for La Paz. A ferry crossing to get us a cross a branch of Lake Titicaca and to arrive on "firm land". The road is asphalted and in good condition, and we arrive in La Paz after 3 hours. On the way we were able to observe people doing the traditional Easter pilgrimage between La Paz and Copacabana, on foot!

Crossing over to the mainland to go to La Paz

After a small lunch at the hotel, we visit the National Museum of Archeology, which happens to be next-door to the hotel, which is a good thing as it is raining quite heavily ! In the museum we could observe some archeological pieces of different Pre-Colombian cultures, notably of Tiwanaku which was the most important one. That evening, Anna goes to bed quite early, she is suffering a little bit from the altitude, loss of appetite and shortness of breath.

The next morning, Christine and Yves leave to wander around the center of La Paz, Anna stays at the hotel, still suffering with a short breath.

That afternoon, Anna is feeling better, and all of us go to visit the colonial center. We also go to Plaza Murillo, where the Presidential Palace is, to see the Easter procession. Unfortunately the weather is not on our side, and the rain sends us back to the hotel.

The next day, we take the car to go visit the ruins of Tiwanaku, the capital city of the Tiwanaku culture. This time we are lucky, the sun is shining bright and strong. We discover the Door to the Sun, Door to the Moon, the semi-subterraneous Temple, with its funny faces, and a pyramid still in excavation, among other structures. Not having found any suitable restaurant for lunch, we have a picnic at the foot of the ruins, and we still have a pack of dried meat brought by Christine, not bad at all. On returning to La Paz, the rain has returned, so we stay at the hotel, we write some e-mails. And then before dinner, Yves and Anna take advantage of the pool and go for a swim, as it is the last evening.
